Privacy policy

This policy explains what information Lasting Content collects when you read the site, use one of its tools or write to us, why we collect it, who receives it, how long we keep it, and the choices you have. “We”, “us” and “our” mean the business that runs lastingcontent.com. This version is effective September 27, 2026.

The short version

  • You can read every guide and use every tool without an account. We have no sign-up forms, no newsletter and no advertising.
  • Most tools run in your browser. The AI crawler IP verifier sends the address you enter to our server for one check, and the server does not store it.
  • We measure how the site is used with one analytics tool, PostHog, which also records sessions. Text you type into fields is masked before a recording leaves your browser, and tool results are left out of recordings.
  • We do not sell or share your information for advertising.

What we collect

How you use the site. When a page loads, our analytics script records the page you viewed, the page that sent you here, the links and buttons you click, how long the page was open and how far you scrolled, that a form was submitted (its name and number of fields, not what you typed), your browser, device type and screen size, how fast the page loaded, errors the page hit, and the address, result and duration of requests the page makes to our server (not their content). A random ID kept in your browser links your visits together. These events leave out the query string (the part of an address after “?”).

Session recordings. We record some visits to see where pages are hard to use. A recording captures the page as you saw it and your mouse movement, clicks and scrolling. Anything typed or pasted into a form field is masked in your browser before a recording is sent, but a recording keeps the full address of each page, including anything after “?”. In our tools, the fields you fill in and the results built from what you enter are left out of recordings completely: for example, the tables the Search Console click drop analyzer builds from an export you paste, or a crawler check result. A recording shows an empty placeholder where they were; the rest of the page still appears. If you want no recording at all, block analytics as described under “Cookies and browser storage”.

Approximate location. Our analytics provider receives your IP address and uses it to estimate your country and city. We use that estimate in reports, not to identify you.

What you enter in our tools. The robots.txt tester, the llms.txt validator, the Search Console click drop analyzer and the content durability scorer work entirely in your browser; what you paste into them is not sent to our server. The AI crawler IP verifier is different: it sends the IP address, the crawler you picked and any user agent you paste to our server, which looks up the address in DNS and checks it against the crawler operator’s published IP list. We use them for that one check and do not store them on our server; the result on the page shows the address, and it is left out of session recordings. Site search filters the guides in your browser.

Bots and automated visits. When a request to this site identifies itself in its user agent as a crawler, a bot, a monitoring or link-preview service, a headless or scripted client, or the Claude app’s built-in browser, our server sends one event straight to PostHog with the name it matched, the page path and the user agent string. It does not record a location or create a visitor profile. Requests that do not identify themselves this way are not part of this count.

Email you send us. When you write to jimmy@lastingcontent.com, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. Please do not send passwords or access to your analytics or Search Console accounts.

Technical data. Like any website, our hosting provider receives your IP address, browser details and the address of each page you request, so it can deliver the page and protect the site against abuse.

Why we use it

  • To run the site, deliver pages and keep it secure.
  • To understand which guides and tools are useful, find pages that are confusing or broken, and decide what to fix or write next.
  • To measure how search engines, AI crawlers and other bots visit the site, which feeds our research on them.
  • To answer your message, check a correction you send and keep a record of it.
  • To meet legal obligations and protect our rights.

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, our legal basis for analytics and technical data is our legitimate interest in running and improving a free public website, for the crawler verifier it is providing the check you asked for, and for email it is answering the message you chose to send. You can object at any time; see “Your choices and rights” below.

Who receives it

We share information only with companies that run parts of the site for us, each limited to that job:

  • Vercel hosts the site, serves every page and runs the crawler verifier check.
  • PostHog is our analytics and session recording tool. It receives site-use data through this site’s own address and the bot count directly from our server, and stores them in the United States.
  • Mailgun receives email sent to our address, holds each message for up to a day until we collect it, and sends our replies.
  • Google Cloud stores our private archive of the email we receive.
  • AI tools help us read, sort and answer the email we receive.

We also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect people’s safety or our legal rights, or to a buyer if the site is ever sold, in which case this policy continues to apply to it. We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for targeted advertising.

Our private dashboard

The people who run this site use a password-protected area of it to read their own search and analytics reports. It is not open to readers. Our analytics script does not run there, and signing in sets a cookie only in the browser of the person who signs in.

Cookies and browser storage

Our analytics tool stores a first-party cookie and a local storage entry on this site to tell one visit from the next, and a session storage entry that lasts until you close the tab. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party cookies, and the site’s fonts are served from our own domain, so reading a page does not contact a font provider. You can block or delete cookies and site data in your browser settings; every page and tool still works without them.

Our analytics does not currently change its behaviour in response to Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals. Blocking cookies and site data stops us from linking your visits together. To stop analytics and recordings completely, use a content blocker that blocks our analytics script (/pa.js) or turn off JavaScript for this site; the guides still work without it.

How long we keep it

  • Analytics data, recordings and bot counts are kept in PostHog under its retention settings and used only to understand and improve the site and our crawler research.
  • Crawler verifier input is not stored on our server after the check.
  • Email we receive is kept in a private archive with no fixed deletion date, so that we can follow up on corrections. Ask us and we will delete your messages from our inbox and the archive, unless we must keep them for a legal reason.
  • Technical logs are kept by our hosting provider for a short period under its own retention settings.

How we protect it

Every page is served over an encrypted connection. Access to our analytics, our dashboard and our email is limited to the people who run the site and the tools they use for that work. No system is perfectly secure; if you think information you sent us has been exposed, tell us at once.

Your choices and rights

You can ask us what information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it, delete it, or stop using it. Depending on where you live, for example in the EEA, the UK, California, Colorado, Connecticut or Virginia, the law may give you further rights, such as a copy of your data in a portable form, a right to object to processing, and a right not to be treated differently for using your rights. We honor these requests wherever you live.

Analytics data is tied to a random ID in your browser, not to your name, so we can only find it if you help us locate it, for example by telling us the date and pages of a visit. Clearing your cookies and site data starts a new ID. To make a request, email jimmy@lastingcontent.com. If you are in the EEA or the UK, you can also complain to your data protection authority.

Where information is processed

Our analytics, email and email archive providers process information in the United States, and our hosting provider serves pages from the United States and other countries. If you visit from another country, your information is transferred to the United States, where privacy law may differ from the law where you live.

Children

Lasting Content is written for publishers and content teams. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has sent us information, tell us and we will delete it.

Other websites

Guides and the crawler directory link to search engines, AI companies and other sources. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and this policy does not cover them.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we update it on this page and change the effective date at the top. If a change is significant, we say so on this page.
